چکیده

This paper is concerned with a caging problem: we wish to surround an object B by a multifingered hand such that B has some freedom to move, but still cannot escape the “cage” formed by the fingers. We introduce a new notion of the caging set, which is based on the configuration-space representation of the free motions of the hand system with respect to the object. Using stratified Morse theory, we show that the hand’s configuration at which the cage is broken corresponds to a frictionless equilibrium grasp. This allows us to formulate a technique for computing the caging set of a two-fingered hand whose opening is controlled by a single parameter. The technique generalizes to one-parameter gripping systems having a higher

Evaluation of quality of partial caging by a planar two-fingered hand

In partial caging, an object is partially constrained by robots and is able to escape from there. Although complete caging ensures the hand never releases the confined object, insufficient degrees of freedom of robots does not often satisfy the conditions for caging. Partial caging, however, can be accomplished even by robots having such mechanical restriction. We consider a case that an object...

An overview of gripping force measurement at the micro and nano-scales using two-fingered microrobotic systems

Two-fingered micromanipulation systems with an integrated force sensor are widely used in robotics to sense and control gripping forces at the micro and nano-scales. They became of primary importance for an efficient manipulation and characterization of highly deformable biomaterials and nanostructures. This paper presents a chronological overview of gripping force measurement using two-fingere...

From Caging to Grasping

This paper digs into the relationship between cages and grasps of a rigid body. In particular, it considers the use of cages as waypoints to grasp an object. We introduce the concept of pregrasping cages, caging configurations from which an object can be grasped without first breaking the cage. For two-fingered manipulators, all cages are pregrasping cages and, consequently, useful waypoints to...
